Generally speaking five minutes is the duration, you may get more but, at most only a couple of minutes. The longer you shake it the brighter the light. Keep in mind, once the light dims you can shake it again for 15 to 30 seconds and full power is restored. You will never be without light so long as you are physically able to shake the flashlight. You can not over shake it and because it does not use a conventional bulb you never have to worry about burning the bulb out.
